Greetings from the very chilly Mississippi Gulf Coast!
Now that the fat-man in the red suit has gone back to the North Pole and everyone has recovered from their New Year’s Eve celebrating, it’s once again time to start thinking about the upcoming racing season. YEE-HAW!
I spoke with Ronald this morning and we are going to have a practice day at GMP on Sunday, February 7, 2010 from 1pm until 5pm ($5 dollar entry fee). This will allow everyone to ‘knock the rust off’ and get everything ready for the 3rd Annual ICE-BREAKER on February 27, 2010. Ronald, Mark and Supervisor Huguet have been working on the track for several weeks and have made a few changes: lowered the entire track by 3 feet and leveled out the run-off area on the back-stretch. While the actual racing surface has not changed, these changes should eliminate the need for the big berm around the outside part of the track.
Speaking of the ICE-BREAKER, as most of you know, Mr. Huey Watts passed away late last year. Mr. Watts played a major role in karting in the Deep South and to help honor his memory, the GMP ICE-BREAKER will now be called THE HUEY WATTS MEMORIAL – ICE-BREAKER. Thanks to Mr. Watts, dirt-karting is still a big deal in the South and we dang sure appreciate all that he did for karting over the years.
The 2010 HUEY WATTS MEMORIAL – ICE-BREAKER at GMP will be a ‘day race’. Gates will open at 9am, Practice will begin at 11am and Qualifying will start at 1pm with Feature Racing to follow. Last year, we had 198 entries for this race and racers from 5 different states (TX, LA, MS, AL and FL) showed up to test their skills against some of the best kart racers in South. We are hoping for even more racers at this year’s event.
Also, please don’t forget about the FIRESTONE – Gulf Coast Tri-State Series that will begin at GMP on March 13, 2010. The FIRESTONE Series will race at 6 different tracks (Acadiana-LA, Flomaton-AL, Checkered Flag-MS and South MS Speedway-MS) in 3 different states and end with the ‘Super Bowl Race’ at the Cajun Indoor Nationals in Gonzales, LA. If you would like more info about this series, plz click on the FIRESTONE link at the top/left of the Gulfcoastmotorsportspark.com web-site or send me a PM or e-mail (jthornton@treasurebay.com).
GMP Dates for Feb/Mar of 2010
Feb. 07 – PRACTICE DAY AT GMP
Feb. 27 – 2010 HUEY WATTS MEMORIAL ICE-BREAKER
Mar. 13 – 1st FIRESTONE Gulf Coast Tri-State Series Race (GMP)
Mar. 27 – 1st GMP Points Race of the 2010 Racing Season
Thanks to all of our ‘regulars’, GMP had a great racing season in 2009. We averaged over 130 entries each Saturday night during our points season and many of our ‘regulars’ represented the LA, MS and AL Gulf Coast Region very well at the Cajun Nationals and O’Reilly Nationals. We are looking forward to seeing everyone at the Practice Day on Feb. 7 and if you were not a ‘GMP regular’ in 2009, we hope that you will consider racing with us in 2010.
Just over a month and counting!
